Can We Help Glendora's City Budget?

I read an article in the Tribune this morning that brought up some ideas about this blog and the I Shop Glendora program. The article, “Glendora to Vote on Balanced Budget”, written by Jennifer McLain, a Staff Writer for the SGV Tribune, talks about the City of Glendora and how they’ve managed to balance their budget even amidst the current downturn in the economy. The City Council’s current budget of $75mm dollars has erased the 1.6 million deficit the city was facing. There won’t be a decline in services as the city made cuts to non-filled jobs and a high salaried public information position. Considering those cuts alone won’t take care of the 1.6 million deficit, the city has seen new tax revenue from the new Diamond Ridge center and also expects a decent amount of fees.

This got me thinking. Our whole goal of the I Shop Glendora program (from which this blog began) is to create awareness among our citizens to think about shopping within Glendora first. Before heading out to a neighboring town for groceries, gas, clothing and larger purchases such as cars, computers and home services, simply check with a Glendora business. Even if you get multiple estimates or look around for discounts, give a Glendora business a shot. That simple effort alone, done by each of us, could more than take care of any tax deficits in the future. It will also enable us to enhance our community services and continue to improve the city we love.

Mayor, Karen Davis, has been a great supporter of the I Shop Glendora program as well as her predecessor, Ken Herman. In conjunction with the Glendora Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor’s support, we’ve built the ISG program. If you look out for our next quarterly publication (mailed the week of July 28), you’ll not only find more information on how your tax dollars are working, you’ll also see some great deals from our local businesses. You can contact the Glendora Chamber of Commerce or simply search the web to find other businesses in Glendora.

Every time you make a purchase (and you’re not in Glendora), think if you could have made that purchase from a Glendora business. Then, next time you can say I shop Glendora first!
